A South Korean boy band called BTS, formerly known as the Bangtan Boys, was founded in 2010. A large portion of the material produced by the band is co-written or co-produced by Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook. Originally a hip hop group, they have since broadened their musical style to include a variety of genres. Their lyrics have primarily dealt with issues related to mental health, coming-of-age and school-age issues, loss, the path to self-love, individualism, and the negative effects of fame and recognition. Along with allusions to literature, philosophy, and psychology, their discography and related work also features an alternate universe plot.

BTS made their Big Hit Entertainment debut in 2013 with the single album 2 Cool 4 Skool. 2014 saw the release of BTS’s first studio albums in Korean and Japanese, titled Dark & Wild and Wake Up, respectively. Wings (2016), the group’s second Korean studio album, became their first to sell a million copies in Korea. By 2017, BTS had established themselves in the international music scene and spearheaded the Korean Wave in the US. They were the first Korean group to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their song “Mic Drop” and the first South Korean act to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). In 2020, BTS became one of the few groups since the Beatles (in 1966–1968) to chart four US number-one albums in less than two years, with Love Yourself: Answer (2018) becoming the first Korean album certified Platinum by the RIAA; in the same year, they also became the first all-South Korean act to reach number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 with their Grammy-nominated single “Dynamite”. They became the fastest act to achieve four US number-one singles since Justin Timberlake in 2006 with the release of their follow-up albums, “Savage Love,” “Life Goes On,” “Butter,” and “Permission to Dance.”

As of 2023, BTS is the best-selling musical act in South Korean history according to the Circle Chart, having sold in excess of 40 million albums. Their studio album Map of the Soul: 7 (2020) is the first to sell more than four million copies in South Korea and is currently the third best-selling album of all time in the nation. They are the first non-English-speaking and Asian act to sell out concerts at Wembley Stadium and the Rose Bowl (Love Yourself World Tour, 2019), and were named the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry’s (IFPI) Global Recording Artist of the Year for both 2020 and 2021. Numerous American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and five Grammy Award nominations are among the group’s accomplishments. Outside of music, they have addressed three sessions of the United Nations General Assembly and partnered with UNICEF in 2017 to establish the Love Myself anti-violence campaign. Dubbed the “Princes of Pop,” BTS was featured as “Next Generation Leaders” on Time’s international cover. They have also been listed as the 25 most influential people on the internet (2017–2019) and the 100 most influential people in the world (2019). In 2018, they were awarded the South Korean Order of Cultural Merit, becoming the youngest recipients, for their contributions to promoting Korean culture and language.

In order to allow the members to fulfill their 18 months of required South Korean military service, the group announced on June 14, 2022, that group activities would pause. A reunion is scheduled for 2025. The eldest participant, Jin, enlisted on December 13, 2022; J-Hope, on April 18, 2023, and Suga, on September 22, 2023, came next.

BTS is an acronym for Bangtan Sonyeondan, a Korean phrase that literally translates to “Bulletproof Boy Scouts.” J-Hope, a group member, says the name represents the group’s intention “to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets”. They go by the name Bōdan Shōnendan in Japan. As part of their new brand identity, BTS revealed in July 2017 that their name would also stand for “Beyond the Scene”. As a result, the idea of development “from a boy to an adult who opens the doors that are facing forward” was included in the meaning of their name.

As musical inspirations, BTS has listed Nas, Eminem, Kanye West, Drake, Post Malone, Charlie Puth, Danger, and Seo Taiji and Boys. Additionally, they have mentioned Queen as an inspiration, claiming to have “grown up watching videos of Live Aid.” Jin honored Queen at their London performance at Wembley Stadium by leading the audience in a rendition of Freddie Mercury’s “ay-oh” chant. Released at the height of BTS’s hip-hop concept, “Hip Hop Phile” honors the musicians who shaped the group, including Biggie, CL Smooth, Jay-Z, South Korean group Epik High, and others.

Demian, a coming-of-age book by Hermann Hesse, served as the inspiration for their 2016 album Wings. The music video for their song “Blood Sweat & Tears” incorporates visual references to Pieter Bruegel’s Landscape with the Fall of Icarus, Herbert James Draper’s The Lament for Icarus, and Bruegel’s The Fall of the Rebel Angels. The song itself quotes Friedrich Nietzsche’s Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Their works have been influenced by a variety of literary and other sources, including works by Nietzsche, Carl Jung, Haruki Murakami, Ursula K. Le Guin, and George Orwell. They drew inspiration for the Love Yourself series from Erich Fromm’s The Art of Loving, and from James R. Doty’s memoir Into the Magic Shop for their 2018 song “Magic Shop” from Love Yourself: Tear.

Since their beginnings, BTS has made hip hop their primary musical genre, partly because of the impact of RM and Suga’s history as underground rappers; the group was mentored by American rappers during their initial trips to the US. Author Crystal S. Anderson said, “BTS’s rising popularity in the US represents the continuation of the ways that K-pop functions as part of a global R&B tradition.” Bang Si-hyuk had previously acknowledged that K-pop as a whole draws from black music. Vulture’s T.K. Park and Youngdae Kim considered the song “Outro: Her” from Love Yourself: Her to be the finest illustration of the group’s grasp of classic hip hop, featuring raps influenced by Tupac and Chuck D combined with jazzy chords from the 1990s to create a timeless hip hop sound.

2016’s “Blood Sweat & Tears” release hastened BTS’s change from a hip-hop group to a pop group. Although the song incorporates elements of dancehall, reggaeton, and moombahton, Park and Kim observed that the song chooses a “baroque mysticism” over the “partylike atmosphere of its influences”. Additionally, the group started fusing traditional Korean elements into their songs. For instance, their 2018 single “Idol” includes vocal imitations of the sounds of Korean janggu drums as well as an adlib from Pansori, a type of operatic storytelling from Korea.

Although BTS still has a strong hip-hop foundation, their sound has evolved. Dark & Wild in 2014 was their first album featuring R&B, rock, and jazz hip hop; The Most Beautiful Moment in Life in album series; Wings and You Never Walk Alone featuring moombahton and tropical house; Love Yourself featuring future bass and Latin pop; Map of the Soul featuring slow-dance ballads, emo rap, Afro pop, funk, trap, pop rock, and hip pop; and “Dynamite,” a disco track. The band members have experimented with various genres on solo tracks, like the neo soul track “Stigma” by V and the flowing R&B track “Lie” by Jimin.

Time magazine called BTS the “Princes of Pop” and included them among the year’s 100 most influential people on April 29, 2019. Silvio Pietroluongo, a Billboard executive, likened the group’s impact to that of the Beatles. Helena Kosinski, an executive at MRC Data, observed that “BTS were the first to become mainstream, even though they weren’t the ones who first introduced K-Pop to the world. They appeal to people in their 50s and 60s as well as the younger generation.” BTS, who debuted on the Global Artist Chart in 2018, was the first non-English speaking artist to rank second globally in terms of sales across all media platforms, behind only Drake. 2020 saw BTS win the IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year award, making history as the first non-Western, non-English speaking artist to do so. In the first half of 2019, BTS’s market share in South Korea increased to 41.9 percent from 25.3 percent in the previous year.

Youna Kim (2022) defined BTS as the vanguard of the Korean Wave, exemplifying the spread of Korean culture around the world with the same ferocity and impact as Psy (2020) and the Academy Award-winning South Korean film Parasite (2020). The Bank of Korea, the central bank of South Korea, discovered in 2021 that BTS had a “ripple effect” that enhanced interest in Korean movies, culture, and language study as well as increased tourism to South Korea. Additionally, BTS contributed roughly US$5 billion annually, or 0.5 percent, to the country’s GDP. According to a 2018 study, over the previous four years, 800,000 foreign visitors to South Korea had traveled there for BTS-related reasons annually on average.

Writers noted that BTS’s success demonstrates the value of having a strong, active fan base in the age of social media, where fan campaigning can be just as important to a song’s success as musical quality. They also identified BTS as leaders even among other extremely influential K-pop groups like Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, Exo, Twice, and Blackpink. In order to maximize their creative freedom and artistic originality, the group has also set itself apart in the K-pop business by negotiating less restrictive contracts with their management company. By using this more modern method of career management, BTS was able to forge stronger bonds with South Korean youth and inspire genuineness and individuality in their fan base.

Over their career, BTS has won a ton of awards. They have consecutively won the Billboard Music Award for Top Social Artist since 2017; are the only K-pop group to win Top Duo/Group, at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards; and are the most-awarded group in BBMA history as of 2022, with 12 wins overall. BTS became the first Asian act in the history of the show to win Artist of the Year in 2021. They are also the only K-pop group to win Favorite Duo or Group – Pop/Rock and Favorite Social Artist at the American Music Awards. They are both the first Korean pop act and artist to be nominated for both a Brit Award and a Grammy Award. BTS holds the record for most foreign artist awards in Japan Gold Disc Awards history with 30 total, including four straight wins for Artist of the Year (Asia). Additionally, they took home 50 trophies from the MAMA Awards. The group continues to be the most awarded artist in South Korean history as of 2023, having won 70 daesangs.
